5. Pre-production- Videos , recces , location

This is our out door location scene 2 after the office, here are one of the angles we will be shooting
the advantages of this area is that the amount of public coming and going will be less so this will allows us to shoot without any problems it will also allow us to get a high angle birds eye view shot the only problem is we must be very careful while shooting as it is from a high point another factor is the traffic passing constantly we must make sure we film at a suitable time.
here is the office location for our first scene, the benefit of this office and location is that it is inside our college so time will not be wasted in terms of travelling another is that there are no costs, usually to hire an office you have to rent it out in this case we have the opportunity to use this place for free.
This is the last shot for our outdoor scene the benefit of this is that it is in alley way so it is all quiet, we will be able to perform our shootings without no trouble or delay as the location is off the main road. we have had permission from neighbours to record.

Research and Planning(Video)-the moving image work
today our task is to complete and answer the following questions
Research - what research did i carry out into similar products
Research -what research did i carry out into my target audience
Logistic planning- how well did we organise our characters
narrative planning- evaluate our story boards or scripts.
and finally evaluating my own and group management.
What research did you carry out into similar products?

Research -what research did i carry out into my target audience
Logistic planning- how well did we organise our characters
narrative planning- evaluate our story boards or scripts.
and finally evaluating my own and group management.
What research did you carry out into similar products?
The first stage of our research were looking at short film case studies, In relation which was similar to our genre that we were initially thinking of, which in this case was thriller/action. The case studies I personally looked at were Victim – short horror film, knowing too much thriller short film and Closed doors – thriller short film. Which were all related to our ideas that we wanted to do.
I looked at these short films as my case studies in order to identify how successful in both horror and thriller the short films were, how they appealed to the audience, how the effects were used, the camera angles as well as the use of soundtracks.
Once looking at these elements consisting within the short films, we noted down how they appealed to the audience as well as the use of soundtracks building suspense.
After major discussions and meetings with our group we outlined what will fit best to suit our genre and therefore came up with a final idea.
With gaining skills from last year course , I believe it will help me towards this year’s course such as conducting research using technological presentations, Identifying camera angles for the right purpose for example, the use of a shaky camera to create a fast pace pulling the audience, the correct use of colour; red emphasizing anger or control or black room a fear and tension. Elements like these will help us build a creative short film; if we have a correct structure I believe our film will turn out to be very good.

(Research and planning)(Video)-Task 4 Lesson
This is the lesson where we read our feedback and changed our ideas based on the feedback that was given to us. however in saying that much was not needed as our peers were happy with our storyline. The only thing we considered was to have maybe as suggested by one of our peers is to have an external voice over and the location suggested in the feedback.

Todays class work
Today in lesson we worked on our presentation Sound: During this short film both Diegetic and non-diegetic sounds are constantly utilized. The diegetic sound permits us to see all the more about the scene as the victimized person calls his companion saying he is in help and he is plainly being taken after. However by saying that not an excessive amount of is constantly utilized as it cuts the strain. The non-diegetic sound forms the pressure as the volume and power of the mind-set music builds significantly including and building strain. An illustration would be the moderate develop at the starting emulated by sensational music amid the pursuit.

4. Focus groups / pitch:Feedback and key points from pitch.
FEEDBACK ON THE GROUP PITCH
We presented our pitch to the class and gained useful feedback.
The class agreed with most of our ideas they said it is something they would watch
we discussed with the group and they said what will our sound effects be....they gave us the idea of using ambient sounds such as leaves, gun shots, loading gun.
They asked if it was achievable or complicated, we showed them our ideas and how simple we wanted to produce, and therefore we think that it is achievable.
They also talked about the use of blackmailing the hitman, they said we could cut that bit out and have the hitman fighting his inner conscience.
I think i agree on this too, i think it drifts the plot away.
with most votes on internal struggle they also said that we could have a voice over portraying the character.
However we feel that our scriptive and plans are good and that we will stick with most of our ideas as the feedback we mostly got were positive. Although we had other ideas we think that by adding those ideas it will slightly drift the plot to a different direction therefore stick to our initial ideas but we agreed that the use of ambient sound effects could develop our production and make it realistic.

2. Research / case studies:AS Media Case study 3(UPDATE)
•Awake
- Short Film. Directed by Danny Blackstock, Created by Glen Cheng, Melinda Ng and
Stephanie Bourgeois. Starring Cameron James Phillips. 2013.
I have chosen to look at this short film as i hope to produce a short film of a similar theme/ genre that is a Thriller however it is quite different to the others as it some a some humor also and could be classified as a comedy also.
This narrative structure of this piece is linear as there are no flashbacks or scenes that take place in the pass of very similar to the other case studies.

•This
Short film captures the life of a young man (in his early twenties) being the
only one left on the world though we are not told of this however it is
implied by the different techniques used. The Film goes through his daily routine as the only one left in the
world showing us how he deals with the boredom and what is feelings are on the
matter such as missing friends and family members, he particularly mentions not
knowing what happened to his grandfather before he got sick while looking into
his room and seeing a cane leaning against a night stand. The Character also
mentions the strange things that are happening to him mentioning the first
day he attempted to drive however his car was filled with water. The film then
goes on to show us how he spends his time trying out new hobbies to keep
himself occupied, while he narrates his feelings.•Towards
the end he begins to notice strange things happening to him more frequently,
and how he begins to believe he is no longer alone, questioning his
sanity. The final scene of this short film, shows the main character
arriving home and noticing a door left open to which he follows. The room
reveals a figure however we cannot see their face as the camera angle is an
over the shoulder shot of the new character holding a cane, upon sight the main
character of the short film calls out 'Grandpa?' showing us his grandfather has
returned. The last
shot of the Short Film is a shot of a full page newspaper story to which we can
see a photo of our main character and his car being pulled out of a river with
the heading "Young man found dead in his car after crashing into the
Fraser river" to which we can assume that he is not the only person left
on earth but is in an alternate world different to the living one as he is dead
along with his grandfather who is presumed dead also.
Miss En Scene:
Location-•There are 3 locations used within this short film, the first begin the house in which the main character lives, and is also the most used location within the short film. Here we see him going through his daily routine such as waking up, eating breakfast, keeping busy and then finally sleeping. The second Location used within this short film is the street in which he lives. on a few times throughout this short film we see the street, whether the main character is looking through his window observing the emptiness or stepping out (particular the scenes with the gnome and car) And the final location is the beach where he is skimming Peebles as part of the hobbies he is talking about in the narration.
Costume- Costume is not really portrayed here as there is only one character and does not really have an impact with the short film . Very Similar with closed doors in fact.
Props- •here are a number of props used in this short film, the main character picks up off of the street and continues to use the gnome as a sign of friendship throughout as he is alone. The second, is the characters car that at first we see is filled with water which confuses the main character however later on we know that, that is the same car he crashed into the river in. And Finally, the cane that belongs to his Grandfather. We first see this cane in his Grandfathers room leaning against the nightstand however then makes another appearance at the end when the main character finds his Grandfather back in his room the props are used well here to really give more information/understanding to the audience since the clothing element is not really portrayed.
Makeup- It really again is not portrayed as it would not have an impact considering the context of the film but the detail of the props has made up for the lack of makeup and costume being showed.
Sound-
Digetic sound is not really used as much here as there is one characters however there are some specific examples of it being used such as the cards collapsing , pebbles sinking and of course the main character saying "grandpa " at the end. This however is contrasted with non digetic sound as it is commonly used. Examples would be the background song and narrative speaking. To add suspense non digetic sound should be the most frequently used as it creates tension in the audiences head.
Target Audience- Target audience is not specifically targeted however in saying that roughly anyone 16+ and anyone who loves a thriller would be engaged to watch this.
Ideas- This film uses some good elements and makes a good thriller. Some ideas we can consider is how the non digetic sound is used really well ie the background music and narrative and is something we could consider in publishing in our short film with the same genre.

Knowing Too Much Short Film : Thriller / Action film
Directed by Mathew Morton
Sound Effects: Mathew Morton
Music: Gino and VC Pro stores.
Cast: Michael and Andy.
Knowing too much is a short film which is very similar to my own. It is very comparable to my actual short film video. This short film uses useful techniques which can be useful towards my video.
Knowing too much is about a young man who is possibly a student followed by a killer . The scene opens with a young boy who is with some private documents. He is then been seen followed by a killer perhaps after the documents itself. During the film as expected he gets killed and the killer takes he documents and flees.
The film uses a linear structure which is shot in live action. The characters represented are both modern we can see this by their outfit. The killer was dressed in a suit perhaps indicating he is organised with some institution and is probably sent out as a hitman.
The Camera Techniques used are: Medium Close up,
Long shot, extreme close up, establishing shot, Birds eye view, Doll shots,
Panning shot are examples we consider to use in our film. More information is
on the prezi. Sound Effects: Mathew Morton
Music: Gino and VC Pro stores.
Cast: Michael and Andy.

Editing:
Cross Cutting- This is used in fast paced scenes for example it is effective during the chase scene with the boy running up the stairs. It helps build suspense it also works well with tense music.
Invincible Editing- The flow of cuts are very smooth. Very smooth to the point that the audience can’t even tell and are so concentrated on the actual film itself. This has been done very well in the short film and we look to edit it and structure it the same way. The film also uses line cuts to create this as we see the scene in various camera angles. Additionally there was a lot of cutting to help build the continuity by using plenty of angles and positions.
Establishing shot- This Helped set the scene and allowed the audience to get a good view on the setting of the scene which is again a cliché with the use of a dark deserted place. However the codes and convention must be followed in order to achieve a successful thriller short film.
Miss En Scene:
.The lighting used in the scenes are very low which adds tensions as it follows the usual codes and conventions of a thriller short film. The low lighting does not allow the audience to get a full glimpse of the hitman making him more mysterious. This aspect of the film really inspired to us to follow and use this sample of the film.
.Sound- The use of Sound effects is also a big element to increase the quality of this short thriller. The Music builds in the epic fast paced scenes. There is however only limited dialogue in fact it’s only used 2 times. Too much dialogue decreases the tension of the thriller.
Costume-The Costume is represented very well and clear. We only have two characters. (The Victim and the Hitman. With barely any dialogue the clothing of the character needs to be clear portrayed by the type of clothing. In this instance the hitman is wearing a full smart suit indicating he is in an organisation of some sort of professional firm whereas the victim is a young boy in casual clothing which indicates he is minding his own business just having a normal day. We plan to follow this similar structure in our short due to the fact there is very little dialogue so it is important we make the audience understand better by emphasising other elements such as i.e. Clothing.
Make up- Again make up is not really portrayed as the other elements as it to some extent does not have much of an impact.
Props- The props is another vital element which help indicate and emphasise the thrill of this thriller. The Document used helps again create that mystery to the scene. It is portrayed quite important due to multiple camera shots and close ups. Also a big giveaway at the end where he takes the document. The hitman also uses a gun which is of course a big giveaway. The gun itself creates suspense as a gun will automatically indicate danger/violence arriving to the audience. This is contrasted with the victim however as he is with a key and a phone again this emphasises that he is venerable and just minding his everyday business.
Target audience - Target audience is again ranged pretty much any age as there is not a lot of violence. It is targeted to those who like thrillers but I would say an ideal age rating is 15+.
Ideas for short film- We have looked at this film as a great role model to create ours. We especially loved the fact that how some elements were represented for the storyline to make sense. The Clothing and sound especially were great along with the camera angle/techniques we can use for our short film.
Narrative:
The sequence is structured very simply and just flows through. There are no flashbacks or pauses to show the past so everything is in the present. By doing this creates a cliff hanger and the audience does not know the specific purpose so we have to assume what the reason for murder was. The story has a closed structure as it flows through at we know what is going to happen step by step.
It also contains enigma by the building of suspense and action multiple times.
